Rufus is initially quite a shy little boy but once he feels settled, he is curious and playful. He loves tug of war games and rough & tumble play with Bella one of his foster fur siblings. Rufus is called ‘Mr Kissy’ by his foster family as he adores cuddles & tummy rubs.
Rufus gets super excited by mealtimes, but not so much for his walks. He can be reluctant but with some encouragement and reassurance he is fine once he gets going. and he understands commands well.
Dogs name: Rufus
Age: 1 Year 7 months
Can live with children: Yes, aged 7 years and above
Can live with dogs: Yes, spayed, friendly female dogs
Can live with cats: Untested but probably ok
Current location: Redditch, Birmingham
Things to be aware of:
Rufus has Spina Bifida and has limited control with his bowel movement. He is on a raw diet so bowel movements are small, firm and very easy to pick up, but they can and will drop out of him without his knowledge and he will sometimes wee indoors as well. Whilst the Spina Bifida doesn’t require any treatment, it has left Rufus wobbly on his back end
Rufus is frightened of loud noises; he will run and hide, and he turns into a food thief if he is in the vicinity of your food which his foster family are working on. And speaking of food, Rufus will inhale his food at feeding time so he must continue with his slow feeder and Licky Mat.
He also has eye drops 4 times a day which he just about tolerates but will have a grumble.
The ideal home:
Rufus will never be a long-distance walker so we are looking for a calm home where he has a garden to run around in and where he will be taken for short walks (15 minutes) to help his mobility.
He doesn’t deal with stairs so his new home will need to be floor level.
Rufus has enjoyed having the company of 2 female dogs in foster so it would be nice for him to be rehomed in a similar situation with a female dog that is happy to share her home.
Any children in the home will be dog savvy and aged 7 years and above, he gets scared and anxious around younger children, especially if they are noisy so any visiting children will need to be supervised.
Rufus is a real character, and he makes his foster family laugh every day. He was returned to foster after his new family introduced an entire male dog to the family which resulted in fighting. But Rufus has shown he really enjoys having a playful companion so a new friend would be ideal for him as it has helped with his confidence.
Please don’t let Rufus’ spina bifida put you off applying for him, he is a young, smashing boy who has no idea he has a disability, and he is a joy to have in the home.
He still needs boundaries enforcing such as removing him when it’s your mealtime, but he is still young and he is still learning.
Rufus’ adoption donation fee is £450 and will need to be paid in full prior to him going home which will also be subject to a home check.
