A BIT ABOUT ME

Personality:

Barkley has a wonderful gift that makes you need to love him.

He is stubborn and charming and likes everything on his terms.

Barkley is “MANS” best friend and will choose to spend time with the men/boys in the home over the girls/ladies.

Barkley is an independent boy and will withdraw and spend time by himself as he settles in his new home. With a calm environment he will start to seek attention from the humans in his life.

It just takes him a little time to feel safe and settled, and his little quirks to come out. He needs to know he can trust you to love him.

Behaviour:

His favourite thing to do is sit at your side, he will lift his leg for you to give him tummy rubs. (this especially helps when he is itchy)

Barkley loves toys, but they don’t last long he has his favourite blue bunny that he loves to suckle and self sooth.

Barkley knows what time it is, and he will bark to let you know he’s hungry or needs water.

Barkley is head shy and will move away from any attempt to stroke his head, and he doesn’t like to be held onto.

Barkley is crate trained, we would advise his new family to continue this as he settles into his new home, it will provide him with his own safe space.

Barkley will make his boundaries known to new doggy companions, he prefers a calmer dog and doesn’t interact with rough play. Truly a gentle giant.

Needs:

Barkley needs a calm but active family home.

A family prepared to give him the time he needs and understands it won’t happen overnight.

Barkley’s family must be prepared to change things in their home to provide him safe and allergy free home. Something as small as changing their cleaning products to method will make all the difference to his quality of life.

Barkley needs a man for a best friend but adores children just as much.

Barkley will need to stay on a controlled diet of Purina pro plan hypoallergenic.

He will need to remain on Apoquel for the remainder of his life, dosage maybe able to be lowered, depending on the season.

And will need regular baths.

A garden is a must he loves the outdoors.

Walk/exercise:

Barkley loves his walks, he is a puller, but this is excitement, and he does calm down, we would encourage his new family to work on lead training.

Barkley enjoys country walks, the beach or just round the houses. He is happy to meet dogs whilst out but tends to keep to himself.

Toilet trained:

Barkley is a very good boy and will scratch at the door to go out.

Travel:

Barkley loves the car, or a van. He loves to sit up front and watching out the windscreen. He also travels very well in the boot both using a seatbelt harness.

We recommend using a seatbelt restraint or travel crate whenever transporting dogs.

Things to be aware of:

Barkley’s skin is still healing and has a little way to go before he is back to complete fur regrowth. GBSR will continue to support his new family with how to care for his skin.

Barkley is currently on a course of steroids and antibiotics, once completed he will be put on Apoquel which runs at a cost of approximately £1 per tablet – 100 tablets = £104

Barkley is on a diet and his family must control his weight as he is prone to heavy weight gain.

Barkley’s allergies are environmental and dietary, his treatment will be life long and the responsibility of his adoptive family.

Barkley can snatch food or treats, so must be kept separated from other dogs or children when there is food. He doesn’t have a malicious bone in his body, but food is his kryptonite.

Sometimes Barkley is excited to play but doesn’t realise his size, any young children in the home must be supervised, as he has the potential to jump and knock children over.

Children must understand that bulldogs need time to settle in and have space to rest peacefully and uninterrupted.

Additional information:

Barkley has had a few setbacks in his life, and each has taken him a little longer to come round from. He needs you to earn his trust and you can do that with patience. He will come round and soon adore his forever family.

Barkley is truly a 1 in a million, genuine boy. He deserves his happy ever after.

Barkley’s adoption donation fee is £450 and will need to be paid in full prior to him going home which will also be subject to a home check.

A little of Barkley’s story below,

Please welcome 5 year old Barkley back into foster.

Barkley is an adorable boy who originally came into foster in December 2021 with skin allergies that had raged out of control.

He was in foster with Michelle Cathcart and we gradually got his skin under control with meds and a strict diet before he was adopted in 2022.

Sadly, Barkley’s skin is again out of control, and his owner is struggling to meet his needs and the needs of her new baby.

So, with a heavy heart, she has asked us to take Barkley back under our Rescue Back Up policy, to get the treatment he badly needs.

Barkley was collected by Emma and her husband last night and will foster him initially while we get to grips with what’s going on with him.

Thank you so much for jumping in to get this boy back to us Emma, we really appreciate you dropping everything last night, we know it’s not always easy, but you and Dan were amazing

Today Barkley saw our vet and he has been started on Steroids and Antibiotics in the first instance, and he will return to the vet in. 2 weeks to update his treatment plan

He will also have Malaseb baths twice a week to help. with his sore skin.

Thank you again to Emma and to Jaci who took Barkley to the vets for us today. With your help he has been able to start his treatment immediately.

So welcome back Barkley, we are so sorry to see you so sad, but we will get you sorted, and back to the happy little Barkley we know and love.
