A BIT ABOUT ME

Personality:

Winnie and Poppy are a beautiful, devoted mother-and-daughter duo, each with her own endearing personality.

Winnie is very much the dignified lady of the house, while Poppy is the more playful of the pair. Both girls are exceptionally affectionate and happiest when they are close to their people. Winnie is content to enjoy her own space, but she also adores a belly rub and will often flop down as someone approaches, ready to receive one.

Poppy is equally loving and has a charming way of asking for attention: she will offer her paw and gently rub against any part of you she can reach, making it clear just how much she enjoys affection.

Both girls are wonderfully sociable and greet people of all ages with warmth and enthusiasm.

Their individual quirks make them especially endearing. Winnie is known for her signature flop when someone approaches, a gentle reminder that she is expecting a belly rub. At times she also makes a soft, snore-like sound while quietly keeping an eye on her daughter’s antics. Poppy has an ever-rising paw that she likes you to hold, and she will affectionately press her head or muzzle against you while making a sweet little nuzzling sound.

Above all, Winnie and Poppy are extraordinarily loving companions. They would happily curl up beside their family on a sofa or bed if invited, although they have never tried to climb up unprompted. When their foster family joins them on the floor, both girls simply want to settle in close and enjoy a cuddle.

Behaviour:

Like many bulldogs, Winnie and Poppy can have a determined streak, particularly when it is time to leave the company of someone they love. Winnie knows her own mind and may decide that a longer walk is not for her, while lively Poppy is usually keen to continue exploring.

Winnie will sit when asked, while Poppy is less consistent with this cue; however, both girls will leave a room when requested. They may first try their luck by flopping down for a belly rub in the hope of staying a little longer an affectionate display of typical bulldog determination.

The girls can occasionally bicker over toys, so playtime and access to valued items should be managed thoughtfully.

As an older lady, Winnie is most comfortable with a calm and peaceful lifestyle. She may have a brief period of barking once each evening, which can sometimes leave Poppy feeling overstimulated. Their foster family manages this successfully by giving Winnie some quiet time in her bed while Poppy relaxes with the family in the front room.

Both girls are highly food-motivated and can become very enthusiastic at mealtimes, occasionally forgetting their size and surroundings. A calm, consistent routine will help them enjoy their food safely and settle more easily.

Needs:

Our beautiful mother-and-daughter duo are ready to enjoy a calmer pace of life, spending their days watching the world go by and appreciating the comfort and companionship of a loving home.

As an older pair, Winnie and Poppy thrive on consistency and would be ideally suited to a family who understands their need for routine and enjoys a relaxed, home-based lifestyle.

A secure garden is essential, providing them with a safe and comfortable outdoor space to enjoy.

They could share their home with a calm, neutered male dog who is comfortable welcoming two new companions; however, they will not be rehomed with an unneutered male.

Their new family should continue the routine established in foster care, including the positive use of crates as a comfortable retreat where each girl can enjoy her own space whenever needed.

Walk/exercise:

Both girls walk well on the lead, although they may pull initially in their excitement to set off. Winnie prefers a gentler outing with plenty of time to sniff and is not keen on walking long distances, while Poppy enjoys a more purposeful, extended walk.

Their foster family introduced separate walks so that each girl could enjoy the level of exercise that suits her. At first, Poppy was reluctant to go without her mum, but both are now comfortable being walked separately.

If Winnie feels unsure, she may lie flat on the ground, while Poppy can sometimes bark; however, this behaviour is steadily improving.

Toilet trained:

Both house trained, Winnie can need encouragement to go out though at times.

Travel:

This beautiful pair travel well, no concerns they get themselves comfy and enjoy the ride. Because of this we will accept applications of up to 4 hours from their current location.

We recommend using a seatbelt restraint or travel crate whenever transporting dogs.

**TRANSPORTING DURING WARMER WEATHER IT IS IMPORTANT TO KEEP THE CAR AS COOL AS POSSIBLE**

Things to be aware of:

Both Winnie and Poppy have recently had seasons while in foster care. For this reason, they will be adopted under spay contracts and recalled for their procedures at an appropriate time. The spays will be carried out by a veterinary practice chosen by the charity, with all associated costs covered by the charity.

Given their ages, both girls will benefit from regular health checks and a consistent, attentive care routine, including ongoing dental assessments.

Winnie may require dental treatment in the future, and any associated care and costs will be the responsibility of her new owner.

Sometimes the girls are excited to get attention or food but don’t realise their size, any young children in the home must be supervised, as they have the potential to jump and knock children over.

Children must understand that bulldogs need time to settle in and have space to rest peacefully and uninterrupted.

Additional information from Winnie & Poppy’s foster family:

If you want a dog that wants to be needed, loved and cuddled then these girls are for you. Both are so well behaved, it’s such a shame they’ve ended up in this situation. Their behaviour shows how much they were loved, taken care of and trained. Only thing id say is that they are not walkers. Winnie does not like to walk far, but does like the routine of going out at least 2 times a day whereas Poppy would like to go for a bit of a longer walk.

Winnie & Poppy’s adoption donation fee is £600 and will need to be paid in full prior to him/her/them going home which will also be subject to a home check.

**Every dog rehomed by GBSR receives Rescue Back-up for their whole Life. And the admin team are available for advice and support for the whole of that dog’s lifetime via Messenger, therefore the successful applicant will need to have an active Facebook and Messenger account for the life of the dog. If you cannot agree to this, please don’t apply**

We were contacted by a gentleman who had sadly become homeless and needed a safe place for his beloved girls, as he was no longer able to care for them. This is an incredibly heartbreaking situation, and we’re so grateful that we were able to help.

Winnie and Poppy were completely adored by their owner, but sometimes life takes an unexpected turn. We ask that everyone responds with kindness and without judgment. Any negative comments will be removed.

Winnie, the mama bear, is a beautiful, gentle soul at eight years old. She’s already showing us that she’s a little diva, but she’s also incredibly caring.

Six-year-old Poppy is just like her mum! She’s already bossing around Denver, the resident pooch in her foster home—and we’re absolutely here for it!

The girls are now settling into foster care with the wonderful Jade & her son, Tegwyn, and resident pooch Denver. Thank you, Jade, for your patience and compassion in welcoming them into your home. Taking on one foster is a big commitment, let alone two, and we appreciate you more than words can say. It’s already clear how loved the girls are with you.

Winnie and Poppy will visit the vets this week for full assessments, and we’re looking forward to seeing more of their personalities shine through as they settle in over the coming weeks.
