Last night, we lost our beautiful Buttercup.
Heartbroken doesn’t even begin to describe how we are feeling. Having to hear the words, “She’s passed away,” after everything we had tried is simply devastating.
Despite emergency BOAS surgery and the incredible efforts of the veterinary team, Buttercup suffered catastrophic decompensation of her lungs. CPR was performed, but sadly they were unable to bring her back.
Over the last three weeks, we did absolutely everything we possibly could to save her, spending nearly £6,000 on her care. But the vets explained that she had been left suffering from BOAS for far too long, and the damage had become irreversible, despite surgery.
The findings during surgery were truly shocking. Buttercup’s laryngeal saccules were so severely enlarged, alongside an extremely long soft palate and enlarged tongue, that the surgeon said she had no more breathing space than “the width of a blade of grass when you blow on it.” Hearing those words was utterly heartbreaking.
I am absolutely devastated for our entire team. Our wonderful foster, Amie, our Rescue Coordinator Helen, and I fought for Buttercup every single step of the way. We never gave up on her, but sadly it just wasn’t enough.
Buttercup deserved so much more. She deserved to breathe without struggling. She deserved comfort instead of fighting for every breath.
Please, if your dog struggles on walks, pants excessively, takes more than a few minutes to recover after exercise, snores heavily, or has noisy breathing, please don’t ignore it. Book a BOAS assessment. It really can be the difference between life and death.
Sadly, our sweet Buttercup didn’t find us soon enough.
Run free, beautiful girl. No more struggling. No more fighting for every breath. You were loved beyond words, and you will never be forgotten.

Buttercup & Fendi’s Story
We recently shared a fundraiser to help our poorly newcomer, #Buttercup. Now it’s time to properly introduce her and her sister, #Fendi.
The girls arrived together earlier this week and are being fostered by our wonderful foster, Amie, in the South West. A huge thank you to Amie for acting so quickly when Buttercup suddenly became extremely unwell on the very day they arrived. Her quick thinking meant Buttercup received the emergency care she needed straight away, and we’re incredibly grateful for everything she’s done for the girls.
Thankfully, after spending two nights at the emergency vets and receiving the right treatment, Buttercup is now much calmer and making great progress.
We’d also like to say a heartfelt thank you to everyone who donated towards Buttercup’s care. Your kindness and generosity have made a real difference.

Sadly, both girls came into our care following a relationship breakdown. It’s always heartbreaking when families have to make such difficult decisions, but we’re so grateful we can offer dogs like Fendi and Buttercup the chance of a fresh start.
Both girls are 4 years old, unspayed, and are already showing their cheeky, affectionate personalities. We can’t wait to watch them settle into foster and see their confidence continue to grow.
We’ll continue to monitor Buttercup closely and, once she’s had time to properly decompress, we’ll arrange an assessment to determine whether she would benefit from BOAS surgery. Both girls will also be scheduled to be spayed in due course.
At this stage, Fendi and Buttercup are not available for applications or expressions of interest. As always, we don’t accept applications until our dogs have been fully assessed and are ready to begin looking for their forever homes.
