Personality:
Jack and Matilda are a lovely pair who each have their own wonderful personalities but complement each other beautifully. Jack is the gentler and more laid-back of the two. He can be a little shy and nervous at first, but once he feels comfortable, his lovely nature really shines through. He is affectionate, easy-going and happiest when he is close to his people, enjoying plenty of cuddles before settling down for a snooze.
Matilda is the livelier and more outgoing of the pair. She is affectionate, playful and full of character, with lots of energy and enthusiasm for life. She loves being involved with her people, whether that is enjoying a game of fetch, having a cuddle or simply being part of the action. She has a wonderfully funny personality and a lovely soft side, and once she has had the chance to burn off some energy, she is more than happy to settle down and relax.
Together, they make a wonderful pair. Jack’s calm and gentle nature balances Matilda’s more energetic personality, while Matilda brings plenty of fun and confidence to their relationship. Both are very affectionate and love attention from their people, and both have a lovely ability to settle and enjoy some quiet time too. They are a gorgeous pair with so much love and companionship to offer their new family.
Behaviour:
Jack and Matilda are both well behaved in the home and respond well to guidance. They know several basic commands, with Jack responding well to “sit” and “wait”, while Matilda knows sit, paw, down and wait and also responds to “leave”. Jack is happy to be handled for his routine care, including cleaning his ears, paws and tail pocket, although he does try to pull away when his face is washed. He can be wary of the robot hoover.
Matilda can become over-excited during play with Jack and may need some quiet time or separation to help her settle. Jack can be protective of toys and has occasionally tried to guard them from Matilda, so toys will need to be monitored and managed appropriately. Neither has shown any issues around having their food bowls removed.
Both dogs have shown that they can settle well when left alone. Jack has been left for around two hours without any problems, while Matilda settles quickly when left.
Needs:
Jack and Matilda would benefit from a home where they can continue to build on the progress they have made in foster care, with patient owners who understand that they are still young and have plenty of opportunity to learn. Jack may benefit from having plenty of reassurance in new or unfamiliar situations, while Matilda will need an owner who can recognise when she has had enough stimulation and give her the opportunity to switch off.
They would benefit from having their own spaces within the home where they can choose to relax separately when they want some downtime. Jack may enjoy having somewhere quiet and comfortable to retreat to, while Matilda benefits from having time away from Jack when she becomes overexcited.
They will also need continued consistency and positive reinforcement from their new family, along with appropriate supervision around toys. As a bonded pair, they will need to be kept together and given time to continue settling into their new life at their own pace.
Walk/exercise:
Jack and Matilda have different exercise needs, so their new family will need to find a routine that works well for both of them. Jack enjoys his outings and is happy to walk alongside Matilda, while Matilda has more energy and will benefit from opportunities to keep active and explore. She particularly enjoys games of fetch and is happiest when she has plenty to keep her occupied.
Both will benefit from regular, age-appropriate exercise and opportunities for enrichment, with a good balance between activity and rest. Matilda can settle well after she has had the chance to burn off some energy, so her new family should be prepared to provide her with enough activity to meet her needs.
Jack has had limited experience meeting unfamiliar dogs. When briefly introduced to dogs outside the household, he showed very little interest and there were no concerns noted. He has not been tested walking with unfamiliar dogs, so his behaviour in that situation is not fully known.
Matilda is more reactive around unfamiliar dogs. She can pull and bark when passing other dogs or when she sees them behind a gate. Her reactions are more pronounced with smaller dogs.
Any new owner must be prepared to manage Matilda’s reactions to unfamiliar dogs and understand that this is an area that will need ongoing patience, consistency and training. They will need to be confident handling her and prepared to give her space from other dogs, when necessary, rather than expecting her to greet every dog she meets. Introductions to any new dogs should be handled carefully and at her own pace, with her behaviour closely monitored. As Jack has had limited experience with unfamiliar dogs, any introductions involving him should also be gradual and carefully managed.
Toilet trained:
Both Jack and Matilda are toilet trained. Jack has had no accidents in foster care, and Matilda is also fully house trained with no accidents reported.
Travel
Jack travels very well in the car. He is comfortable on longer journeys and will happily sit or lie down without barking. When travelling with Matilda, they can have the occasional disagreement over who gets the middle seat, so this may need to be managed.
Matilda has only experienced shorter car journeys in foster care, but she has travelled well during these and no concerns have been noted. Because of this we would consider homes up to four hours away from their foster home.
We recommend using a seatbelt restraint or travel crate whenever transporting dogs.
Things to be aware of:
Jack is currently recovering from BOAS surgery and is taking one antihistamine each day, so his new owners will need to continue following any ongoing care instructions provided by the rescue and vets. Matilda also takes one antihistamine daily.
Jack can also be slightly nervous in unfamiliar surroundings and may need a little time and reassurance when faced with new experiences.
As they are a bonded pair, their new family will need to be prepared for the commitment of keeping them together and supporting both dogs as individuals. They can happily have separate downtime when needed, so giving them their own space within the home will be beneficial.
Sometimes bulldogs are excited to play but don’t always realise their size, any young children in the home must be supervised, as they has the potential to jump and knock children over.
Children must understand that bulldogs need time to settle in and have space to rest peacefully and uninterrupted.

Matilda and Jack have been my1st foster with GBSR and what a pleasure it has been.
Tilly is a loving, playful and affectionate girl with lots of personality. She has plenty of enthusiasm for life she loves a walk or to play fetch in the garden, she thrives on play, Matilda has a soft and gentle side and loves a cuddle and belly tickles❤️
Matilda will make a wonderful addition to a family with lots of energy or a young couple who can give her plenty of much-loved walks.

Jack has been my 1st foster with GBSR and what a way to start this experience, I swear he was sent to me from heaven to help heal my broken heart.
Jack has been nothing but a pleasure, he is gentle, well behaved, funny, entertaining.
Jack has been through surgery and took it all in his stride, no problems at all.
If circumstances had been different Jack would have found his forever home already I will be sad to see him go My loss will certainly be another families gain.
Matilda & Jack’s adoption donation fee is £1000 and will need to be paid in full prior to them going home which will also be subject to a home check.
**Every dog rehomed by GBSR receives Rescue Back-up for their whole Life. And the admin team are available for advice and support for the whole of that dog’s lifetime via Messenger, therefore the successful applicant will need to have an active Facebook and Messenger account for the life of the dog. If you cannot agree to this, please don’t apply**

Matilda & Jack’s Story
Please welcome #Matilda and #Jacky back into the loving arms of GBSR.
Sadly, both dogs have been surrendered following a relationship breakdown. It is an incredibly difficult situation, but we are grateful that we could be there for them when they needed us most.
Beautiful Matilda was adopted from GBSR just under two years ago. She is now four years old, spayed and has the loveliest nature. She is an incredibly playful girl with so much love to give.
Her younger brother, Jacky, is a curious and caring two-year-old neutered boy. He absolutely loves affection and enjoys nothing more than playing with his big sister.
Matilda and Jacky have lived together for the past year and have formed a very special bond. We did not want them to experience the additional upset of being separated, so it was incredibly important to us that we found a foster home where they could remain together.
We already know that Jacky is likely to require BOAS surgery in the near future. Both dogs will be visiting the vets very soon for full health checks, allowing us to assess their needs and ensure they receive any treatment required.
This is exactly why we provide rescue back-up for life. We understand that circumstances can change, but our commitment to our dogs never will. Every GBSR dog will always have a safe place to return to.
Matilda and Jacky are now settling into foster care in the South West with the lovely Tara and her family.
