A BIT ABOUT ME

Personality:

Rolo is a gorgeous, bear-faced boy with a wonderfully endearing character. He can appear quite serious at first, but there is a softer, affectionate side to him that is beginning to shine through as he settles and learns that he is safe. He loves his people and will happily push his whole body into you for fuss and affection, with his little tail wagging when he sees you, especially when he knows food or a walk is on the cards!

Rolo is a laid-back boy who loves his home comforts, his food and, most of all, a good sleep. He can be stubborn and is certainly a little bit of a bossy prince at times, but he is also starting to show more of his personality, including barking when he wants some attention. He has some hearing loss which can sometimes make him difficult to read, particularly as he may not hear you approaching and can be startled if he doesn’t realise someone is nearby.

He is still learning how to enjoy life and seems to be discovering new things at his own pace. There is something rather touching about watching him begin to come out of his shell, and beneath that serious expression is a lovely boy who clearly wants to be loved.

Behaviour:

Rolo is generally well behaved within the home, although he does need clear boundaries and consistent handling. He is still learning what is expected of him and can be quite determined when he has made his mind up about something. His foster family have found that distraction works well when they need to redirect him.

He is making good progress with his training. He knows how to sit and is learning to go to bed. He has also quickly learnt the evening routine and will go into his crate when he sees it, as he associates this with his last meal of the day. His hearing loss does mean that training needs to be adapted, with visual cues and other forms of communication being particularly important.

Rolo does enjoy toys, although his play is gentle. He particularly enjoys chasing a ball or anything that is thrown for him, and he loves suckling on soft toys. He has also enjoyed exploring the toy basket, which has certainly seen better days since he arrived!

He has not shown any possessiveness over his toys and has been able to have toys around the resident without problems. He can become possessive of his people and may want to keep their attention to himself, so clear and consistent boundaries will be important. He will need someone who is confident in recognising his body language and calmly redirecting him when necessary, without allowing him to become overly controlling of interactions. With consistency, patience and sensible management, he can learn what is expected of him and feel secure within his boundaries.

Needs:

Rolo will need a patient and understanding home that is prepared to give him time to continue building his confidence and learning how to enjoy life. He benefits from a calm routine, clear boundaries and consistent handling.

Rolo will need careful management around food and other situations where he may become possessive. If living with another dog, separate feeding and sensible supervision will be essential, along with slow introductions and an understanding of his boundaries. His adopters will need to be confident enough to provide structure and not allow him to take over.

He also needs ongoing skin and ear care. His skin has improved considerably but still requires regular bathing and cleaning, with his face and the sore area around his nose needing daily attention. His ears also require regular cleaning with the veterinary-recommended product.

Rolo would benefit from someone who is around for much of the day while he continues to settle, with time and patience to help him adjust to his new home. He would be best suited to a home with older, dog-savvy teenagers or adults who understand his needs and can give him the consistency, supervision and reassurance he requires.

Walk/exercise:

Rolo has made really good progress with his walking since arriving in foster. When he first came into care, his back legs were very weak and would give way easily, and he became breathless after even a short walk. He has gradually built up his strength and stamina and can now manage around a 20-minute walk at a comfortable pace.

Rolo enjoys his walks and his foster family currently take him out several times a day, including separate walks. He is currently better on walks alongside the resident dog, although he is also managing well when walking alone. He should not be allowed off lead unless he is in a secure enclosed area, as he has no recall.

Rolo has generally been very calm when meeting unfamiliar dogs. When walking alone, he tends to show little interest in other dogs and is usually happy to simply carry on with his walk. He has recently started taking more notice of other dogs when walking the resident dog, as he appears to follow her lead, but this has not resulted in any issues.

Toilet trained:

Yes, Rolo is doing well with his toilet training. He was initially reported to wee on soft furnishings and did have some accidents on areas of carpet, but his foster family have established a good routine which has worked well.

Taking him outside after waking and eating, along with regular opportunities throughout the day, has helped him understand where he should toilet.

Travel:

Rolo travels well in the car and is comfortable on longer journeys. He has happily travelled for over an hour with his foster family and there have been no issues reported. Because of this we would consider homes up to four hours away from his foster home.

We recommend using a seatbelt restraint or travel crate whenever transporting dogs.

Things to be aware of:

Rolo can be quite sensitive around his back end, although this has improved considerably since arriving in foster. He initially had very sore, thickened and yeasty skin around his back end and legs, which required treatment and regular cleaning. The skin is now much healthier, but there are still areas where his coat has not fully grown back.

He is not a fan of having a bath and can need some encouragement to cooperate, so his adopter will need to be prepared to continue with his skin-care routine. He is much happier with wipes and is generally accepting of his ear cleaning and drops.

Rolo can also be difficult to read at times because of his hearing loss. His adopter will need to remember that he may not realise someone is nearby, particularly when sleeping, and should avoid startling him. He has also taken some time to adjust to his new surroundings, so allowing him to settle at his own pace will be important.

Sometimes Rolo is excited to play but doesn’t realise his size, any young children in the home must be supervised, as he has the potential to jump and knock children over.

Children must understand that bulldogs need time to settle in and have space to rest peacefully and uninterrupted.

Additional information from Rolo’s foster family:

Rolo is the most gorgeous bear faced boy who needs someone to teach him how too enjoy life. He still sometimes acts like he’s not sure how to have fun and that breaks my heart as now he’s got the energy im not sure he knows where to channel it.

I can’t wait to see updates and videos of that huge stump of a tail wagging away whilst he’s living his best life

Rolo’s Story

Please welcome the gorgeous #Rolo into the arms of the Springboard Family!

Rolo is an entire five-year-old boy who has been surrendered into our care following a relationship breakdown.

He was collected by Claire over the weekend and is now safely in foster with her and Scott in the North West. A huge thank you to you both for opening your home and your hearts to Rolo during his time of need.

Rolo has some noticeable fur loss, which we believe may be allergy-related. Of course, he will be booked in with our vets for a full health check shortly, where we can get to the bottom of what is going on and make sure he receives everything he needs.

For now, Rolo can concentrate on settling into foster life, receiving lots of love and learning that he is finally somewhere safe.

Welcome to the Springboard Family, Rolo. We promise you are safe now, and we will have you back to tip-top condition in no time.

Please note: Rolo has only just arrived in foster and his applications are not currently open. He needs time to settle, undergo his veterinary assessment and receive any necessary medical treatment before we can consider applications. Please do not attempt to apply for Rolo until his applications are officially opened. We will let you know when that time comes.
